Overview
You have a story worth putting in print. But what actually happens between the idea and the book deal?
Join TITAN for a candid conversation with Shanita Hubbard, a published author who will demystify the traditional publishing process. She will cover crafting a book proposal, finding the right literary agent, navigating contracts and book advances, and the things she wishes she had known before she signed her own deal.
Shanita designed and taught a longer version of this course at the University of Toronto, where professionals have paid $9,000 to take it. On November 12, she's bringing the essentials to our community.
The evening opens with a fireside chat between Shanita and Lori Rodney, Co-founder of Titan Executive Network, and then Shanita takes the stage.
Whether you have a book idea you are still shaping, you are ready to write and publish, or you just finished your book, come with your questions. We will leave time for live Q&A.
About Shanita
Shanita Hubbard is a tenure-track Sociology professor, Soros Justice Fellow, and award-winning, critically acclaimed author of Ride-or-Die: A Feminist Manifesto for the Well-Being of Black Women, published by Hachette—the second largest publisher in the world.
Recognized with a Gold Nautilus Book Award—an honor shared by past literary and thought leaders such as Deepak Chopra and Brené Brown that celebrates books supporting conscious living, high-level wellness, and positive social change—Shanita’s work centers the cultural power and lived experiences of Black women. The book has been hailed by Gabrielle Union as “a must-read for all Black women” and by Tamron Hall as “brilliant and soul-baring.”
As a highly sought-after cultural critic and journalist, Shanita’s writing has appeared in The New York Times, The Washington Post, ESSENCE, The Guardian, ELLE, Vox, and Pitchfork, among others. Acknowledged for her exceptional industry expertise, she was specifically recruited by the University of Toronto to design and teach "The Business of Writing," an exclusive executive cohort course created for professionals looking to master the traditional publishing landscape. This is an industry where people of color historically comprise only about 6 percent of the entire field. However, she is most proud of holding the title of “mother” to a dope Black girl.
